Comptroller Calls on County Attorney to resign

Chris Caya (March 4, 2010)

BUFFALO (wned) - The latest suicide in the Holding Center has the Erie County Comptroller calling for the resignation of County Attorney Cheryl Green.

A 29-year-old Amherst man hanged himself yesterday. He is the third inmate in the past four months to take his own life.

Poloncarz says Green is giving County Executive Chris Collins and Sheriff Timothy Howard bad advice, including last fall's move to keep suicide prevention experts from entering the jail.

"It's time to stop the confrontational nature that the Erie County Sheriff and Erie County Executive have towards the federal and state government...We need to fix the problems that exist in our jails."

On Green's advice, Erie County continues fighting the federal government over jail conditions. Poloncarz says so far County taxpayers have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars taking on the Justice Department.

"It is going to cost the taxpayers of Erie County millions of dollars to settle the lawsuits that will be related to these suicides and other issues that have occured at the jails," said Poloncarz.
