BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - County workers use hundreds of downtown parking spots, but are you the taxpayer footing the bill for many of those spaces?
Grant Loomis said, "It would seem to me that the comptroller could have found a better use of his time to focus on county expenses and the county budget and not this fishing expedition which will result in no taxpayer savings."
Loomis of the Erie County Executive's Office responded Wednesday on a scathing report put out by Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz, which specifically accuses the county executive and the sheriff's office of abusing parking privileges; particularly when it comes to allowing certain county employees to park where and whenever they like.
Poloncarz said, "Unfortunately there are individuals who work for the county that are constantly on the road, deputy commissioner, and the like who do not receive parking privileges, but there are secretaries and clerks who just happen to be politically connected who do receive parking privileges. I think the public deserves a right to know that."
Specifically, Poloncarz says lots like the ones on Oak and Elm on the city's east side near Erie Community College, the loading dock on 25 Delaware, the sheriff's holding center and the Rath Building are all accommodating cars that shouldn't be there and according to Poloncarz, many vehicles are parked off of Franklin Street are displaying certain parking placards that he says may have been printed out at home.
The comptroller also says when they asked the county executive's office for a list of who is given the parking privileges in the Rath Building, they never got that list.
Loomis says they did hand over that information, but are not required to, "At the end of the day, again it's the county executive's decision who parks in the Rath Building and we don't need to spend our time justifying that to the comptroller."
Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard says he did eventually receive a report from the county comptroller and says he will respond soon.
