BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The rising cost of gas has at least one local lawmaker looking for ways to save drivers money.

The latest survey shows prices have jumped 15 cents over the past two weeks.

Capping sales taxes on gasoline - it seems to be what's driving the rhetoric from lawmakers at the local, state and federal level.

Kathy Konst (D-Erie County legislator) said, "If gas was $4 a gallon and you filled up with 20 gallons of gas you would save 95 cents in county taxes, if we capped it at $3."

Erie County legislator Kathy Konst was a guest on WBEN radio to outline her plan to save you money at the pump.

Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz wants to put the brakes on the idea.

Monday, he announced he will not support the plan, citing a loss and revenue and the state projected 20 billion dollar deficit.

Meanwhile, all three presidential candidates are addressing the issue gas cap tax issue.

Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain - different parties but same view when it comes to temporarily capping the nearly 19 cents federal sales tax on gas.

Hillary Clinton (D) said, "We can choose to have oil companies pay out record profits."

John McCain (R) said, "Why don't we give the American working class a little break for the summer."

Democrat Barack Obama counters back, "give me a break. The savings won't get passed on to the consumer," he says.

"The oil companies are going to keep prices right where they were."

Upstate New York's largest leisure and travel organization, Triple A, announced they support a plan to suspend the state's gas tax.
