Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz says sales tax revenue grew by more than $12 million dollars, or seven percent in 2007, compared to 2006.
He also says the extra 0.5% sales tax that was imposed on January 15, 2006 contributed to the increase.
However, the comptroller says sales tax is now the largest revenue source for county government. He says the county will likely face "significant negative financial consequences" if Canadian shoppers stop traveling to the U.S., or if consumer spending slows.
