Retired accountant Phil Kadet was tapped by Republicans to challenge Comptroller Mark Poloncarz. Kadet was an accountant for 30 years with Lumsden and McCormick. The firm's audit of the county discovered the 1983 deficit.
This is Kadet's first time running for public office. The wealthy CPA from East Aurora was briefly considered as a candidate for the last county executive race. Kadet now has the support of County Executive Chris Collins. But Kadet said that would not keep him from being a watchdog for taxpayers.
Kadet fits the Collins mold of a businessman who could finance his own campaign. Kadet said his candidacy is well supported by the party and fundraising. But he would not say if he would use his personal wealth if necessary to fund the campaign.
For now, his opponent has avoided an expensive primary challenge. Poloncarz was endorsed by the Democratic committee Wednesday night. He plans to make Collins' backing of Kadet a central issue in the campaign.
The Democrats also have endorsed a candidate for Sheriff. 56 year-old Cheektowaga Police Captain John Glascott said the sheriff's department needs an overhaul. Glasscott said the department is rife with problems - from escape at the Alden Correctional Facility to accreditation and overcrowding issues at the holding center. He said it is time for new leadership.
Beginning with popular Sheriff Patrick Galivan, Republicans have held the office of Sheriff for the past 12 years. Sheriff Tim Howard has been in office since 2005.
