Poloncarz: County Should Look at Consolidating Fire Companies

June 16, 2010

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz says the county should look into a study to possibly consolidate some volunteer fire companies.

Poloncarz says some areas are overserved. "Amherst and Cheektowaga have ten fire companies, and in some cases five companies are within a mile of a resident," says Poloncarz. At the same time, Poloncarz notes other areas are underserved.

The goal, says Poloncarz, is to not go after firefighters, but make sure the best fire protection is available at the most efficient cost, while ensureing first responders are provided the best in equipment and leadership.

He notes while volunteer fire companies received $43.2 million, there was debt of some $12 million.
